The Alpha

The abandoned industrial yard sprawled across the edge of the city beneath the pale glow of a rising full moon. Rusted storage tanks towered over cracked pavement, while skeletal catwalks stretched between warehouses that had long since fallen silent. Rain from earlier in the evening lingered in shallow depressions throughout the complex, transforming the uneven concrete into a patchwork of dark, reflective pools.

Wind moved through the maze of corroded steel, stirring loose sheets of metal and drawing low groans from the aging structures. The place had been abandoned for decades, yet something about it resisted feeling empty. The old buildings seemed to loom over the yard with a patient silence, as though waiting for something they had witnessed many times before.

Headlights swept across the ruins as a police cruiser rolled through the open gate and advanced deeper into the complex. Its tires hissed through standing water while pale beams crawled over forgotten machinery and collapsed loading platforms before disappearing into shadow.

The vehicle moved without hesitation, following a route that suggested familiarity rather than exploration. Whoever sat behind the wheel had not stumbled upon this place. He had come here deliberately.

When the cruiser stopped near the center of the yard, its engine continued idling for several moments, the low rumble echoing among the steel and concrete remains of another era.

Inside, the officer remained motionless.

Moonlight reflected against the windshield, concealing most of his features, but the tension in his posture was unmistakable. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. Muscles shifted beneath the skin of his massive forearms, and the fabric of his uniform strained around his broad shoulders.

The pressure had been building for hours, growing steadily worse as the moon climbed higher. Every instinct urged him to abandon the city and surrender to what was coming, yet years of discipline had carried him through another shift.

Barely.

When he finally shut off the engine, the silence that settled over the yard felt unnaturally complete. The distant sounds of the city seemed muted here. Water dripped from elevated pipes somewhere overhead. Wind whispered through broken structures.

Beyond that, there was nothing.

No voices. No traffic. No signs of life.

Only the moon watching from above and the vast emptiness surrounding him.

The driver's door opened, and the officer climbed out slowly.

He stood beside the cruiser for a moment, allowing the cool night air to wash over him while his eyes swept across the yard one final time.

Tall and broad-shouldered, he cut an imposing figure even in uniform. Dark hair framed a remarkably handsome face, its strong jaw and clean-cut features suggesting a man in the prime of his life. His short-sleeved police shirt fitted tightly across his muscular chest and arms, while dark uniform trousers disappeared into a pair of tall, old-fashioned black leather boots reaching almost to his knees.

Yet something about his appearance was beginning to seem wrong.

Fine wrinkles had developed around his eyes, subtly at odds with his otherwise youthful features. The muscles along his jaw remained clenched. Every few seconds, something shifted beneath the skin of his thick neck, causing faint folds to gather beneath his chin before smoothing out again.

He knew this place well.

He had stood here many times before.

The yard had changed over the years. Buildings had collapsed. Rust had consumed entire structures. Vegetation had slowly reclaimed portions of the complex.

Yet it always served the same purpose.

Distance. Privacy.

A place where nobody would witness what happened beneath a full moon.

His gaze lifted toward the sky.

The moon stared back.

A low rumble escaped his chest before he could suppress it.

The sound was not loud. It did not need to be.

Even restrained, it carried a depth that no human voice could produce. The growl vibrated through his chest before fading into the stillness around him.

He closed his eyes and released a long breath.

Maintaining the illusion had become exhausting. Every muscle ached from being held within proportions that no longer felt natural. Beneath his familiar human appearance, something considerably larger strained against its confinement.

Not something becoming a beast.

Something that already was one.

He reached for the buttons of his uniform shirt and began undoing them one at a time.

The movement was practiced, almost ceremonial. As each button came free, the pressure around his chest eased slightly. He worked the shirt from his broad shoulders, pulled his arms from the sleeves, and tossed it onto the hood of the cruiser.

For the first time that evening, genuine relief crossed his handsome face.

Moonlight spilled across his bare torso, illuminating a physique that looked extraordinary even by human standards.

His chest was broad and heavily muscled, his abdomen sharply defined, and his shoulders thick with strength. Yet those familiar contours had begun to shift beneath the surface.

Each breath stretched his chest farther than before. Subtle distortions moved beneath his skin as the immense structure concealed within pressed against the shape it had been forced to imitate.

He started walking toward the center of the yard.

His old leather boots creaked with every step. The softened shafts wrinkled around his calves while his feet pressed firmly against the worn leather. Water splashed beneath their heavy soles.

By the time he reached the broad expanse of exposed concrete he normally used, maintaining his human appearance required constant effort.

The skin across his shoulders had become increasingly taut, drawn smooth over muscles that seemed to broaden with every passing minute. Beneath his thickening neck, loose wrinkles gathered whenever he turned his head, bunching along his throat and jawline.

His right hand suddenly clenched into a fist.

He stopped and lowered his gaze toward it.

The skin across his knuckles had become unnaturally smooth. Moonlight reflected from the stretched surface as something larger pressed against it from within.

His fingers thickened. His knuckles pushed outward, distorting the familiar proportions of his human hand.

Fine wrinkles gathered around the joints.

Then his fingernails began to shift.

The human nails tilted forward as heavier, darker claws pressed beneath them. The surrounding skin stretched, pulling tightly around the advancing points.

Small openings appeared along the nail beds.

The skin began to separate.

Not violently, but with the steady inevitability of a covering that could no longer contain what lay beneath it.

The openings widened around the emerging claws. Their edges curled outward, revealing patches of thick, dark fur beneath the human surface.

Another tear appeared across the back of his hand.

This one spread between his knuckles and toward his wrist, exposing a broad, fur-covered hand already fully formed underneath.

The human hand was not changing into something else.

It was being torn apart by the creature concealed within it.

The Alpha flexed his newly exposed fingers.

His heavy claws extended through the openings as the loosened human skin split and gathered around his wrist. The remnants remained attached to the unbroken covering farther up his forearm, stretched around a limb now much too large for it.

His other hand was beginning to follow. The skin across its knuckles tightened, then wrinkled as dark claws pressed outward.

He watched the changes with quiet satisfaction.

The binding was failing.

And he was finally ready to let it.

That was enough.

He no longer needed to hold any of it back.

A growl rolled upward from his chest.

This time, he made no effort to suppress it.

His shoulders jerked wider as another surge of pressure moved through him. Muscles swelled beneath the human skin, their contours becoming increasingly pronounced as his true body pressed outward.

He lowered his head and breathed deeply through his nose.

Each inhale filled a chest steadily becoming too massive for its human confines. The waistband of his uniform trousers tightened around his middle, while the fabric across his thighs drew taut against the growing pressure underneath.

The skin covering him behaved differently.

Unlike his clothing, it had been made to endure this.

The magic woven through it allowed the human disguise to stretch far beyond natural limits, preserving the appearance of flesh even as the body inside strained against its original proportions.

Across his chest and shoulders, the skin pulled tightly over the expanding musculature. Around his lower abdomen, however, wrinkles began gathering where the contours of his true form no longer matched the human shell.

The disguise stretched where his body pressed against it and loosened where the shapes no longer aligned.

It was no longer fitting him correctly.

The powerful man standing beneath the moon had become little more than an increasingly inadequate covering for the creature within.

The realization brought a faint smile to his face.

He had maintained the binding long enough.

The Alpha straightened slightly and allowed his concentration to loosen.

Something gave way almost immediately.

A sharp, wet tearing sound broke the silence.

High between his shoulder blades, the human skin split.

At first, the rupture was little more than a narrow dark line. Then the pressure beneath it increased, drawing the edges apart until a strip of thick, dark fur became visible.

The release traveled through his body.

He lurched forward and dropped into a deep crouch, one clawed hand striking the wet concrete to steady himself.

His shoulders continued broadening above him, forcing the opening along his back wider. His chest swelled against the still-intact skin across his front.

At the same time, his thighs thickened inside his uniform trousers, and his feet expanded sharply within the old leather boots.

He shifted instinctively onto the balls of his feet.

The boots groaned.

Deep wrinkles gathered across the insteps as his feet strained against the leather. He flexed his toes, trying to spread them inside the cramped footwear.

There was no room.

His widening toes pressed against the fronts of the boots, distorting the leather as the clawed toes strained against the leather. The old material stretched tight, its creases briefly disappearing beneath the pressure before gathering again when he relaxed.

The Alpha growled and arched his back.

The opening between his shoulders tore several inches farther down his spine.

Almost simultaneously, a seam in his right boot snapped.

Then another.

The leather split across the toe, revealing a patch of dark fur and the tip of a heavy claw.

His left boot began tearing across the instep.

He flexed his feet again.

Both boots finally gave way.

The fronts split open as his true feet forced their way through. Thick, fur-covered toes emerged one after another, spreading beyond the ruptured leather. Heavy dark claws followed, scraping against the wet pavement as the fronts of his wolfish feet were exposed.

The shafts of the boots, however, remained stubbornly intact around his ankles and calves.

The Alpha lowered his heels.

His exposed clawed toes settled against the wet concrete, while the ruined leather hung in strips around the sides of his feet. The heavier boot shafts still gripped his heels, ankles, and calves.

He flexed his freed toes once against the pavement.

Then another tear traveled down his back.

The opening had extended toward his lower spine, widening as the immense muscles beneath pressed against the edges. Dark fur filled the gap, contrasting sharply with the smooth human skin still covering his chest and sides.

He drew another deep breath.

His chest pushed forward, stretching the human covering so tightly that it shone beneath the moonlight. Along his ribs and abdomen, the skin gathered into irregular folds whenever he shifted, unable to follow the increasingly different contours of his true body. As he stood up, you would hear the stretching sound of fabric and skin.

He was still recognizably human from the front, however, from behind, the illusion had already begun to fall apart.

Another surge of released tension widened the opening across his upper back.

The human skin remained connected across his chest, abdomen, and sides, but the long rupture behind him now offered a way out. The covering had become an open-backed shell, stretched around a creature far larger than the man it imitated.

Both of his hands were now largely exposed. Dark claws extended from broad, fur-covered fingers, while torn remnants of human skin clung around his wrists.

The Alpha reached behind his head.

His fingers disappeared into his dark hair until they found the upper edge of the rupture behind his neck.

Carefully, he worked his claws beneath the skin at the base of his skull.

The covering was still intact across the back of his head, but the tear below it had loosened the tension around his neck.

A low sigh escaped him.

He pulled.

The human skin resisted at first, stretching between his claws. Then it separated with a thick, damp tearing sound.

He drew his hands apart, extending the opening upward through the back of his neck until it reached the base of his scalp.

What had begun as a narrow rupture between his shoulder blades now formed one continuous opening from beneath his hairline to his lower back.

He kept his claws hooked beneath the upper edges.

Everywhere else, the human illusion was deteriorating.

Wrinkles gathered across his stomach. The skin beneath his jaw bunched whenever he moved his head. His cheeks appeared strangely full, while the skin around his mouth stretched over a muzzle that could no longer be comfortably concealed.

He turned his head from side to side.

The human features seemed to follow the movement imperfectly, shifting across the larger structure underneath.

His jaw pressed forward, causing the skin around his mouth to draw taut. The flesh beneath his lower lip sagged where it no longer rested against the same contours.

Even his handsome face had begun to lose its familiar proportions.

He smiled.

The expression looked wrong now, the skin pulling unevenly across a skull no longer shaped like the one it was meant to imitate.

For hours, that face had allowed him to move among humans unnoticed.

Now it was becoming a poor fit.

He could have forced the illusion to last a little longer.

There was no reason to.

The Alpha tightened his grip behind his head and lowered his chin toward his chest, bending forward slightly.

The movement positioned the long opening along his back behind his skull and shoulders.

He closed his eyes.

For the first time that night, the strain left his expression completely.

Then he pulled.

The skin stretched beneath his claws as he widened the opening behind his head. At the same time, he pushed his true skull backward against the split, forcing the elastic covering apart.

The back of his head pressed into the opening first.

For several moments, the human scalp stretched around the larger shape beneath it, dark hair shifting as the hidden skull forced its way toward freedom.

Then the Alpha's true head began emerging through the back of the disguise.

Thick, dark fur appeared beneath the hairline.

He continued drawing his head backward through the opening while the human face remained stretched across the front of his skull.

The enchanted skin yielded around his expanding brow and muzzle, clinging tightly as the larger head gradually withdrew from inside it.

Then the support beneath the human features began to disappear.

His cheeks softened first.

Without the skull filling them, they sagged inward, gathering into loose folds. Wrinkles spread around the eyes as the sockets beneath them withdrew. His mouth slackened. The once-strong jawline collapsed as the heavier muzzle slipped backward and out through the opening behind it.

The human face did not transform.

It emptied.

The Alpha pushed farther through the tear.

The crown of his true head cleared the opening, followed by his pointed ears, which rose naturally once freed from the pressure of the disguise.

His heavy brow emerged next.

Then his long, powerful muzzle.

The human face, now almost entirely unsupported, lost what little definition remained. The nose flattened. The mouth folded inward. The eyes became shallow impressions surrounded by wrinkled skin.

What had moments earlier been the handsome face of a police officer now hung forward as a hollow likeness of one.

The Alpha gave one final backward movement.

His muzzle slipped free.

The empty human mask fell forward.

Still connected to the neck and torso of the disguise, it folded down against his newly exposed chest with a soft, damp slap. Dark human hair draped across his fur while the vacant face rested loosely against him, its features distorted by gravity.

For a moment, the Alpha remained motionless.

Then he drew his first unrestricted breath through his true muzzle.

His nostrils widened.

Damp concrete. Rust. Standing water. The lingering scent of rain.

The night suddenly seemed sharper, richer with details his human covering had kept distant.

He released the breath in a deep rumble and shook his head.

His pointed ears rose and turned toward the faint sounds of the yard.

The freedom of those small movements was almost unfamiliar after hours spent holding his true form beneath the shape of a man.

His shoulders were next.

He rolled them backward one at a time, forcing them through the same opening along his spine. The human skin stretched around each massive shoulder before slipping free.

As soon as the underlying structure withdrew, the emptied skin folded forward, joining the hollow mask already hanging against his chest.

The Alpha drew one arm backward through the opening.

The effect traveled down the limb.

Skin that had been stretched around his enlarged bicep softened as his true arm withdrew. The muscular human upper arm collapsed first, followed by the forearm.

At the wrist, the already torn hand covering finally slipped away from his furred fingers, leaving the entire empty human arm hanging from the shoulder of the disguise.

He freed the other arm the same way.

Without his shoulders and arms supporting it, the upper portion of the human skin rapidly lost its shape.

The chest caved inward.

The abdomen wrinkled.

Both empty arms sagged against his sides while the hollow face remained draped over the center of his broad, fur-covered chest.

The Alpha straightened.

Gravity began drawing the loosened covering downward.

He helped it along with a slow roll of his shoulders, allowing the empty human torso to slip down the front of his body.

The skin remained joined across its front and sides, so the entire upper portion folded together rather than falling away in separate pieces.

Wrinkles compressed across what had once been the chest. The flattened arms tangled among the folds.

The hollow mask descended with them, its dark hair brushing against his fur as the collapsed upper half of the disguise gathered around his waist.

More of the Alpha emerged above the collapsed covering.

Moonlight illuminated his immense shoulders and the thick, dark fur covering his powerful chest. His musculature was considerably larger than the already impressive human form that had concealed it.

His broad arms hung at his sides, ending in heavy, clawed hands. His long muzzle lifted slightly as he breathed, revealing the unmistakable features of an enormous werewolf.

With each movement, the loosened disguise shifted farther downward.

The empty human torso folded into itself until it became difficult to distinguish chest from abdomen, arm from side.

Only the collapsed face remained immediately recognizable, caught among the gathering folds at the front of his waist.

He looked down at it.

For hours, that face had smiled at strangers. Spoken to other officers. Passed beneath streetlights and security cameras without attracting a second glance.

It had worn an expression of confidence, authority, and easy familiarity.

Now it was empty.

The Alpha shifted his hips, allowing the accumulated skin to settle lower.

But the shedding stalled.

Something pressed outward behind him.

At the base of his spine, a remaining section of the enchanted human skin still clung tightly around his lower back and hips. Unlike the collapsed upper body, this portion had not yet been freed from the magic holding it against his true form.

A rounded bulge formed beneath the surface.

His tail.

Until now, it had remained compressed against his body, restrained beneath the same enchantment that had forced the rest of him into human proportions.

With so much of the disguise already released, the remaining binding could no longer hold it.

The bulge lengthened.

The skin stretched.

The Alpha leaned forward slightly as the pressure increased. The waistband of his uniform trousers tightened across his lower back, pulled against the expanding shape beneath it.

Then both restraints began to give.

The trousers split first.

A sharp rip opened the fabric behind him, followed immediately by the thicker sound of the enchanted skin separating beneath it.

Dark fur appeared through the opening.

The tip of his tail pushed free.

More of its length followed, forcing the opening wider until the thick, fur-covered appendage emerged completely.

For several seconds it hung low behind him, cramped from its confinement.

Then the Alpha moved it.

His tail lifted, sweeping through the cool night air before settling naturally behind him.

A low sound of satisfaction escaped his muzzle.

One more part of him was free.

He looked down at what remained.

The empty upper body of the human disguise had gathered around his hips in thick, heavy folds. Somewhere within them were the collapsed chest, flattened arms, and hollow face of the officer he had been only minutes earlier.

Below that tangled mass, however, the enchanted covering still gripped his thighs and legs.

His uniform trousers remained wrapped around it, already split across the seat and strained along the thighs. Their fabric had been pulled out of shape by the larger body beneath.

The Alpha planted both clawed hands against the folds at his hips.

He pushed downward.

The skin resisted around the greater width of his thighs.

Wrinkles compressed beneath his palms as he forced the entire empty upper body toward his legs.

He pushed again.

This time, the skin yielded.

It slid several inches down his thighs with a damp, dragging sound, pulling the torn uniform trousers along with it.

Dark fur appeared above the descending covering.

The Alpha widened his stance and continued working the skin downward, alternating his hands as he pushed the tight material over the heavy contours of his legs.

The empty human torso folded farther into itself, carried downward with the rest of the disguise. The torn trousers bunched around the growing mass of skin, their remaining seams splitting as the material was forced over his powerful thighs.

More of his true legs emerged with every movement.

By the time the covering reached his knees, almost nothing recognizable remained of the body that had entered the yard.

The empty torso, arms, and face had become compressed within the folds surrounding his legs, while the human thighs flattened as the larger werewolf limbs withdrew from them.

He pushed again.

The skin slipped past his knees.

His lower legs emerged, thick with dark fur, while the emptied human legs wrinkled and collapsed beneath his hands.

He worked the covering farther down until the accumulated disguise reached his calves.

There, it encountered the remnants of his boots.

The Alpha looked down.

His broad, fur-covered toes were already exposed, their heavy claws resting against the wet concrete.

Behind them, what remained of the old black leather boots still clung to his heels, ankles, and calves.

The fronts had been torn almost completely away, leaving ragged strips of leather hanging along the sides of his feet. The tall shafts remained wrapped around his lower legs, creased and distorted from the expansion they had endured.

The human skin had nowhere else to go.

It gathered around the ruined boots in heavy folds. The empty lower legs collapsed over the tattered leather until skin, uniform, and boot were tangled together around his ankles.

The Alpha shifted his weight onto one leg.

He lifted the other foot, its exposed claws curling slightly.

Pointing the foot downward, he drew his leg upward through the collapsed human covering and the remains of the boot.

The skin stretched briefly around his heel.

The ruined leather dragged against his fur, its surviving shaft resisting as he pulled.

He flexed his ankle and drew his leg higher.

The torn boot shifted.

Then his heel slipped free.

The rest followed easily.

His broad wolfish foot emerged completely from the tangled remains, leaving the empty human leg collapsed around the ruined boot.

He planted his freed foot on the concrete and spread his toes.

Then he lifted the other.

The second boot resisted briefly as the remaining leather caught around his heel.

The Alpha pulled harder.

The loosened human skin stretched, then slipped free with a damp sound as his heel passed through the opening.

Torn leather folded inward, and the second empty human leg collapsed around what remained of its boot.

He lowered his foot.

Then the Alpha stepped forward.

Nothing followed him.

For the first time that night, no human skin, clothing, or leather remained attached to his body.

He stood at his full height beneath the moon.

The enormous werewolf towered over the abandoned concrete, his broad shoulders and muscular frame covered in thick, dark fur. His heavy muzzle extended beneath a powerful brow, while pointed ears rose alertly above his head.

His arms ended in massive clawed hands. His powerful legs supported a body far larger than the handsome officer who had arrived in the cruiser.

Behind him, his thick tail moved slowly through the night air.

At his feet lay everything that had contained him.

The human skin had collapsed into a tangled approximation of the officer's former body. Its empty legs still ended around the remnants of the battered black boots. Torn uniform trousers remained caught among the folds.

Higher within the heap, the flattened arms and torso had folded together, while the handsome human face remained partially visible beneath a tangle of dark hair.

The Alpha looked down at it.

For hours, that skin had allowed him to walk unnoticed among humans.

It had driven the cruiser.

Worn the uniform.

Spoken with his voice.

Carried a face that strangers trusted without question.

Now there was nothing inside it.

The officer had never been the creature's true form.

He had been the disguise.

The Alpha lifted his gaze.

The full moon hung above the industrial yard, its pale light illuminating the immense figure standing among the ruins.

He drew in a long breath.

Now that the last of the human skin had fallen away, the night opened completely around him.

Standing water. Rust. Damp concrete. Vegetation reclaiming the distant edges of the complex.

Somewhere beyond the abandoned warehouses, small animals moved through the darkness.

His ears turned toward the sound.

A deep growl formed in his chest.

This one was different from the restrained sounds that had escaped him earlier.

There was no human throat attempting to contain it. No enchanted skin forcing his body into proportions suitable for the city.

The sound belonged entirely to him.

The Alpha tilted his head toward the moon and allowed the growl to rise into a powerful, resonant howl.

It rolled through the deserted yard, echoing between the rusted tanks and empty warehouses before fading into the night.

Behind him, the police cruiser remained parked in the moonlight.

At his feet lay the empty remains of the man who had driven it there.

For the rest of the night, he had no reason to wear the shape of a human.
